February 2026 News from the Nursery

From the team at Coastal Hedging

February has certainly reminded us that winter isn’t finished yet! After a run of cold snaps earlier in the season, we’ve seen a mix of heavy rain, strong winds and the occasional brighter day here in South Devon. Despite the unpredictable weather, there’s plenty happening behind the scenes as we gear up for the busy spring period.

Weather Watch

The year began with some very cold days on the nursery, which meant plenty of fleecing for our more tender plants to keep them safe. Recently the focus has shifted to coping with rain and wind — typical February conditions in the South West!

Wildlife on the Nursery

While the team has been busy keeping the plants warm, we aren't the only ones roaming the grounds. We recently set up a wildlife camera to see who our "after-hours" visitors are.

We were delighted to capture a beautiful deer wandering through the nursery on a particularly frosty morning. It’s a wonderful reminder of the quiet, natural environment we strive to maintain here in the South Hams. You can watch the short clip of our visitor on our YouTube channel here: Deer on the Nursery.

Propagation Progress

One of the most encouraging signs of the new season is how well our winter work is paying off. We’ve been sorting through cuttings taken late last year and are pleased to report that many are already well rooted and coming on nicely.

Over the coming weeks we’ll be:
• Potting on newly rooted cuttings
• Checking overwintered stock
• Preparing fresh batches for spring sales
• Keeping a close eye on late frosts

Looking Ahead to Spring

Although February can feel like an “in-between” month, it’s a crucial time in the nursery calendar. With longer days just around the corner, growth will soon start to pick up quickly.

If you’re planning coastal planting projects this year, now is a great time to start thinking about your plant choices. Many of the varieties we grow are specially selected to cope with wind and salt exposure — conditions that coastal gardens know all too well.

Ordering & Availability

Stock is gradually building as we head toward spring. Ordering early is always recommended, particularly for popular hedging and coastal varieties.

As always, thank you for supporting our small family-run nursery in the South Hams. We’ve been growing and supplying plants since 1979 and truly appreciate your continued custom.
